In a move that had many golfing fans pleasantly surprised, Darren Clarke has taken the Open 2011 after some 20 prior attempts. The forty-two year old has become a sort of beacon of admiration as he has proven that perseverance can overcome any hurdle.

There was more than one statistical barrier standing in-between Clarke and success. It had already been over ten years since the last attempt at a major, and Clarke had fallen out of the top 100 ranking. The age difference between him and the competition was nothing to scoff at, either.

There had been no other golfer who had managed to win the Open after more than 15 starts. Clarke’s lifelong dream had been centered on the Open, though, and he kept trying even as the center stage shifted to younger and younger players.

The conditions of the tournament were less than desirable. As typically seen with the British Open, rain and wind plagued golfers from the moment they stepped on the green.

His defining moment was a well executed eagle putt at the seventh hole, but he was a steady force throughout the Open. In the end, he had an amazing three-shot win over the competing Americans.

Phil Michelson started out a strong lead in the major with a slew of birdies in the early Sunday hours, but his luck seemed to run out as he ventured further down the stretch. A consistent failure on his short made him an inconsequential threat to Clarke’s steady drive.

Johnson nipped at Clarke’s heels on the green. With two birdies at the back-nine, he was breathing down his neck with only a two shot deficit. Unfortunately, a wild out-of-bounds shot ended any chances he had at overtaking the older man.

It wasn’t just North Ireland who cheered Clarke on in that finale hour. His persistence had made him a popular figure across many countries and cultures. He was a golfer with a career that many considered past its expiration date struggling against men who were in their prime.
Even so, he was well loved by thousands of people. He drew a sort of empathy from viewers and from the gallery that is rare in the sport. He was by no means perfect, but he had an indomitable spirit that led him to show up at the Ryder Cup even after the recent death of his wife.

His success at the Open inspired a level of empathy among his fans. As they saw him succeed, they felt like they had overcome the odds and succeeded with him.

In the aftermath of his victory, it is speculated that Darren Clarke may end his golfing career on a high note. He is planning to move back to his home in Northern Ireland permanently after finally achieving a dream that many considered impossible.

Darren Clarke has had a lifetime worth of nudging the line between fulfillment and prospect. At the close of the Open, he finally stood at the end of a field with only eighteen holes between him and the crowning that would end a lifelong ambition.

Ireland is one country that always had a steady supply of great golf players. It seems that every year, an Irish golg champion is being born. So who are the top 5 Irish golf players in 2011? Read the list below and see the crop of Irish players who are currently making waves in the world of golf.

Rory McIlroy

Rory McIllroy already won two tour championships and a Ryder Cup and he is only 21 years old. McIllroy got his first taste of victory at the 2009 Dubai Deser Classic at the age of 18, only 18 months after he turned pro. A year after, he won the Quail Hollow Championship and spent most of the time in the world top ten. In 2010, McIlroy made his debut in the Ryder Cup, a tournament he will later describe as “the best even in golf by far.” He has been described as the most exciting young golf player in the world and as being one of the best by his colleagues.

Graeme McDowell

Graeme McDowell has been described as everyone’s second favourite golf player, a title he earned by being an excellent player but not having the x-factor that has propelled other players such as Tiger Woods or even fellow Irishman Rory McIllroy to full stardom. In 2010, he barely qualified for the US Open and then went on to claim the championship. In the same year, he won the Andalucia Masters. He also holds the distinction of sinking the winning cup at the 2010 Ryder Cup. McDowell studied at the University of Alabama before turning pro in 2002. His first victory was at the Scandinavian Masters.

Pádraig Harrington

Pádraig Harrington is considered as Ireland’s most successful golfer of all time. Compared to the other golfing greats of his era, Harrington started late with his golfing career turning pro at the ripe age of 25. He won his first victory soon after at the Spanish Open. In 2006, he won the Volvo Masters when Sergio Garcia bogeyd the 72nd at the tournament. In the same year, Harrington took over the number one spot from Paul Casey. Known in the golfing world as Pod, Harrington won back-to-back Open championships in 2007 and 2008.

Darren Christopher Clarke

Darren Clarke was ranked in the Top 10 of the Official World Golf Rankings for more than 40 weeks between 2000 and 2002. In 1997, he finished second at the British Open. In 2000, he defeated Tiger Woods to win the WGC-Andersen Consulting Match Play Championship. In 2001, he played in the British Open again and placed third. In 2003, he won the WGC-NEC Invitational. He finished second in the 1998, 2000, and 2003 European Tour. He also has wins in the USPGA and Japan tours and has good records in all five Ryder Cup he played in.

Colm Moriarty

After helping the Great Britain and Ireland Walker Cup team win championships, Colm Moriarty turned pro in 2003. In 2005, he qualified for his first full season on the second tier Challenge Tour. In 2007, he won on both the Challenge Tour at the Firstplus Wales Challenge and the PGA Euro Pro Tour at the Wensum Valley International Open. In 2010, he made his major debut at the Open Championship at St. Andrews where he finished tied at 37th place.

One of the most effective ways to increase your golf swing power, speed and distance is making golf swings with golf exercise tubing. This is a golf-specific training program that strengthens and stretches your exact muscles involved in your golf swing.

When golfers think of golf training aids, they think of the Medicus, and other products. Well…using this tubing for your golf training program is fast, easy, convenient and gets results.

Putt In Your Office – I’m dead serious! Bring a spare putter to your work and do it whenever you can. Shut your door…grab your putter…and give it a go! A simple putting drill is to lay a glass on its side and putt your ball into the opening of the glass. You’ve probably seen this drill before, but have you ever done it? It works!

You can also putt to a spot that’s maybe 8-10 feet away if you don’t want to do the glass drill above. If you have any kind of thick carpet, the ball is not going to roll as well, but again…it’s better than nothing.

These are just a few of the many different golf teaching aids available on the market today. Each one can easily help you improve your golf game by giving a more correct swing, along with more distance. Isn’t that something that us weekend golfers are always looking for?

The History of Golf

The origin of golf is unclear and open to debate however the most accepted golf history theory is that golf (as practised today) originated from Scotland in the 12th century, with shepherds knocking stones into rabbit holes in the place where the famous Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews now sits.

Scholars have claimed references to a form of golf from hieroglyphs found on stone tablets dating to ancient Egyptian Pharaohs. Chui Wan (“chui” or ? means striking and “wan” or ? means small ball in Chinese), a game consisting of driving a ball with a stick into holes in the ground, was first mentioned in Dongxuan Records (Chinese: ???), a Chinese book of 11th century, and Chinese professor Ling Hongling of Lanzhou University claims that the game was brought to Europe by the Mongols in the 12th and 13th centuries. It is also believed that golf is originated from another ancient Chinese game “Ji-jou (??)”. A Dutch game was mentioned on 26 February 1297 in a city called Loenen aan de Vecht. Here they played a game with a stick and leather ball. Whomever hit the ball into a target several hundreds of metres away the most number of times, won. The Scottish game of goulf (variously spelled) was mentioned in two 15th century laws prohibiting its play. Some scholars have suggested that this refers to another game, which is more akin to bandy, shinty or hurling than golf. There are also reports of even earlier accounts of a golf like game from continental Europe.

However, these earlier games are more accurately viewed as ancestors of golf, and the modern game as we understand it today originated and developed in Scotland: The earliest permanent golf course originated there, as did the very first written rules, the establishment of the 18-hole course, and the first golf club memberships. The first formalized tournament structures also emerged there and competitions were arranged between different Scottish cities. Over time, the modern game spread to England and the rest of the world. The oldest playing golf course in the world is The Musselburgh Old Links Golf Course. Evidence has shown that golf was played here in 1672 although Mary, Queen of Scots reputedly played there in 1567. In 1646 King Charles I of England, whilst held captive by the Scots in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was reported to entertain himself by playing golf in Shieldfield.

As stated, golf courses have not always had eighteen holes. The St Andrews Links occupy a narrow strip of land along the sea. As early as the 15th century, golfers at St Andrews, in Fife, established a customary route through the undulating terrain, playing to holes whose locations were dictated by topography. The course that emerged featured eleven holes, laid out end to end from the clubhouse to the far end of the property. One played the holes out, turned around, and played the holes in, for a total of 22 holes. In 1764, several of the holes were deemed too short, and were therefore combined. The number was thereby reduced from 11 to nine, so that a complete round of the links comprised 18 holes. Due to the status of St Andrews as the golf capital, all other courses chose to follow suit and the 18-hole course remains the standard today.

Ireland’s climate is significantly warmer than almost all other locations at similar latitude, such as Poland (on the continent) or Newfoundland (on the opposite edge of the Atlantic), due to the warming influence of the North Atlantic drift. The prevailing wind blows from the southwest, breaking on the high mountains of the west coast.

Rainfall is therefore a particularly prominent part of western Irish life, with Valentia Island, off the west coast of County Kerry, getting almost twice as much annual rainfall as Dublin on the east (1400 mm vs. 762 mm). Across the country, about 60% of the annual rainfall occurs between August and January.

January and February are the coldest months of the year, and mean daily air temperatures fall between 4 and 7 °C during these months. July and August are the warmest, with a range of 14 to 16 °C. The sunniest months are May and June, with an average of five to seven hours sunshine per day.[26] Though extreme weather events in Ireland are comparatively rare when compared with other countries in the European Continent, they do occur.

Explosive Atlantic depressions, occurring mainly in the months of December, January and February, can occasionally bring winds of up to 160 km/ph (100 mph) to Western coastal counties; while the summer months, and particularly around late July/early August, sudden and violent thunderstorms can develop, more especially, but not exclusively, across midland and western areas of the country.
